How to Find a French Bulldog Breeder You Can Actually Trust

French Bulldogs are the most popular breed in America, and popularity attracts every kind of breeder. Some have spent years building healthy lines. Some bought two dogs last spring. From a website, they can look identical.

This guide is what we would tell a friend who asked how to tell the difference. It applies whether you are considering Blue Buddha or anyone else.

Start With Health Testing, Then Ask What Kind

Every breeder says their dogs are health tested. The question is what that means.

A DNA panel is a mailed-in cheek swab. It is valuable, and any serious breeder does it, but it only detects specific inherited variants. It says nothing about a dog's hips, knees, or breathing. Those require a veterinarian to put hands on the dog.

For French Bulldogs, ask a breeder about all three:

• Physical evaluations. Were the parents' hips and patellas evaluated by a veterinarian?

• Breathing. Was a BOAS assessment performed? Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome is the single most important breed-specific health issue in Frenchies, and it cannot be detected by a DNA test.

• DNA screening. Which conditions, specifically? For French Bulldogs, the relevant ones include Cystinuria Types 2 and 3, HUU, JHC, and CMR1.

If a breeder cannot name the tests, or says "they're all clear" without being able to show you, keep looking.

Ask to See the Parents

The parents tell you more than the puppies do. Ask to see them, in person or on video, and look at:

• Breathing at rest and after light activity

• Structure and movement

• Temperament, especially around strangers

• Coat and skin condition

A breeder who knows their dogs well will talk about them like family members, not inventory. A breeder who hesitates to show the parents usually has a reason.

Ask How Long They Have Bred Their Own Lines

There is a difference between a breeder who bought two dogs and paired them, and a breeder who has bred their own lines across generations. The second breeder knows what those lines produce: temperament, structure, coat, health patterns, longevity. That knowledge cannot be purchased.

Ask How the Puppies Are Raised

Where a puppy spends its first eight to twelve weeks shapes the adult dog. Ask:

• Are the puppies raised in the home or in a separate building?

• Are they handled daily?

• What have they been exposed to before go-home day?

• Have they started any potty routine?

Our puppies are raised in our home with daily handling, normal household activity, and litter box training before they leave. We want them to have experienced family life before they join a family.

Ask What Happens After the Puppy Goes Home

A responsible breeder is available after the sale. Ask what support looks like, whether the breeder will take a puppy back if a family's circumstances change, and what documentation comes with the puppy. Red Flags to Walk Away From

• No physical health evaluations, only a DNA panel, or no testing at all

• "Rare color" used as the main selling point, especially with a premium attached to color alone

• Refusal to show the parents

• Puppies available immediately, always, in every color

• Pressure to pay a deposit before your questions are answered

• Payment only through untraceable methods

• No written agreement

• A breeder who cannot talk about breathing, structure, or temperament with any depth

Puppy mills and brokers survive because they are convenient. The right breeder may ask you to wait for the right litter. That wait is a good sign.
